About Us

About the Bunspace founders

The site was created and is run by Andrea and Uwe from their home in Sonoma County California, USA, which they share with their five rabbits. Andrea grew up with rabbits and cannot remember a time in her life when she didn't have a bun companion. Unfortunately, it was always a lonely rabbit tucked away in a hutch in the backyard. At the time, there was very little information available about bunnies and what they needed to be healthy and happy pets. About 20 years ago, Andrea got her first house rabbit; and the search for information about the best care, rabbit behavior, healthy diet and bigger better housing continues today. Uwe was introduced to the joys of house rabbits when he met Andrea over twenty years ago and he was smitten with both Andrea and the rabbits from the start. Uwe describes himself and Andrea as "just ordinary rabbit slaves, where Mom has the good ideas and Dad has the experience and knowledge to make them happen." They have ordinary daytime jobs and live with their rabbit family in a fixer-upper house.

How Bunspace got started

The idea to start Bunspace came from Andrea in June 2007. Both Andrea and Uwe got tired of going back and forth between several sites to keep their buns' blogs and pictures up to date, reading forums, sharing stories, checking out other bunnies, and seeking out new and better rabbit information. Some time ago they noticed that there were online communities for cats and dogs, but nothing for rabbits. They decided that it was time for a site dedicated to rabbits and so BunSpace was born.
After working for 8 months in their spare time, the first prototype of Bunspace went online in December of 2007. Since that time the population has swelled to over 6,000 rabbits and continues to grow daily!

Bunspace: A place for the community to gather and talk about their Rabbits

According to Andrea and Uwe; "We wanted to create a site for people like us, where they can share their passion for rabbits, in an environment that is loving, caring and non-judgmental." Bunspace was created to be an inclusive community of people interested in finding and sharing experiences, information and resources for and about house rabbits. In the US alone there are over 4,000000 pet rabbits and as the third most popular pet after dogs and cats, Bunspace provides a forum for the exchange of information and discussion amongst the rabbits and their owners that cannot be found anywhere else.
Many rabbit owners comment on the fact that non-rabbit people don't share their enthusiasm and passion for pet bunnies. One current member commented, "I tried to talk to people about how great rabbits can be as pets, but most people didn't even know rabbits were able to be kept as pets, much less make good ones. I would be flooded with questions like do they scratch or bite? When what I really wanted to be talking about was how sweet and funny they could be. I decided I wanted to find other people who loved rabbits like I did. A Google search led me to BunSpace.com and there I have found the companionship I was looking for."

Rabbit Advocacy

Bunspace helps to create a community resource for linking to rabbit related organizations and web resources for personal enrichment and research on house rabbits, rabbit care, health, nutrition, lifestyle and activism. Since its inception, Bunspace intended to put the "social" into "social networking site", with new features and site enhancements coming out regularly. Bunspace features not only are a lot of fun and a source of information, but also benefit rabbit focused organizations.
Recently Bunspace added a shelter, rescue and adoption section to promote the efforts of these organizations to save rabbits from ending up in a testing facility, a restaurant, a fur plant, or being mistreated in any other way. It is an important principle activity for us to be advocates for rabbits with Bunspace.
Both the Bunspace site and the Bunspace members work to spread the word to the community and beyond about how wonderful rabbits are as pets and to promote education and awareness of the joys and needs of keeping healthy happy pet rabbits.

Bunspace Today

"We would have never thought that our "crazy" idea to create a little world just for buns would turn into such an amazing community in such a short time."
Today, Bunspace has roughly 3000 bunny parents as members from pretty much any country and continent around the world. There are a lot of new members signing up every day and thanks to the very dedicated Bunspace members the sky seems to be the limit. Over 40 different breeds of rabbit are represented on the site. Most of the members are from the US, but there are also plenty from the UK, Canada, Australia and Western Europe (Spain, Italy, Germany, France etc.). Bunspace even has members from as far away as South Africa, Japan, Malta and New Zealand.
Bunspace is a very active community with posts and discussions and blogs going on at all hours. The high level of activity of the bun members on Bunspace contributes to and feeds more activity making the "conversation" feel more like real live discussion and interaction.
